There is something almost poetic about the transition from the humid heat of the city to the cool, crystal-clear embrace of the Philippine waters during this time of year. Most especially in Batangas, where world-class dive sites are regularly visited by foreign tourists from different countries who share the same sport and hobby.ย
While everyone else is heading to the malls to escape the sun, a whole other world is waiting for you beneath the waves.
Iโve always felt that Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the legendary oceanographer, said it best:
"๐๐๐ฃ ๐๐๐จ ๐ค๐ฃ๐ก๐ฎ ๐ฉ๐ค ๐จ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐๐ฃ๐๐๐ฉ๐ ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐จ๐ช๐ง๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ ๐๐จ ๐๐ง๐๐."
As โLove Monthโ comes to a close and the Amihan season begins to roll in, maybe this is your sign to try something different with the people you love. Not just dinner reservations. Not just photos for memories.
But something immersive. Something breathtaking.
Youโll never go wrong with โจ scuba diving โจ in the deep blue.
Before I tried scuba diving, I honestly thought it was just swimming, just with a heavy tank strapped to your back.
But the moment I took my first breath underwater, I realized it was something else entirely.
It felt like liquid space travel.
As I descended, my body slowly adjustedโฆ and then it happened, I became weightless. Not just physically, but mentally. You become weightless. The noise of the world, the traffic, the notifications, the stress, your boss, is replaced by the rhythmic, soothing sound of your own bubbles.
Breathing in.
Breathing out.
That steady exhale rising above you.
Down there, everything slows. The chaos of Manila feels impossibly far away, even though itโs only a few hoursโ drive. No deadlines. No expectations. Just the quiet hum of the ocean holding you.
What amazes me is how accessible this world is. You donโt need a rocket ship or a billion-dollar budget to explore the unknown. Just a short trip, a tank, and the courage to descend and suddenly youโve entered what feels like โouter space.โ
In front of me were coral gardens that looked like alien landscapes. Fish moved like they were choreographed. Creatures I had only seen in documentaries glided past me as if I were part of their world.
For those moments underwater, I wasnโt an employee. I wasnโt stressed. I wasnโt rushing toward the next thing.
I was simply there,ย floating, breathing, witnessing.
And thatโs when I understood: scuba diving isnโt just a swim.
Itโs an escape, a reset, and in many ways, a quiet return to yourself.

As you hover near an anemone, watching these little guys "pop" at you, you realize that Cousteau was right again:
"๐๐๐ ๐๐๐จ๐ฉ ๐ฌ๐๐ฎ ๐ฉ๐ค ๐ค๐๐จ๐๐ง๐ซ๐ ๐ ๐๐๐จ๐ ๐๐จ ๐ฉ๐ค ๐๐๐๐ค๐ข๐ ๐ ๐๐๐จ๐."
I used to look up at the night sky and wonder what was out there, galaxies, planets, entire systems we may never reach. But the more I dive, the more I realize that the greatest mystery isnโt above us.
Itโs beneath us.
The first time I learned that humans have directly observed only about 0.001% of the deep ocean floor far less than what weโve mapped in parts of our solar system, I just stared at that number in disbelief. We talk about exploring Mars and distant worlds, yet right here on Earth lies a frontier we barely understand.
And every time I descend, that thought stays with me.
Thereโs a quiet possibility that the reef in front of me, the curve of a rock formation, or the way light filters through the blue at that exact momentโฆ might be something no other human eye has fully taken in the same way.
That realization does something to me.
It makes me slower. Softer. More attentive.
Underwater, I feel small but not insignificant. Small in the way you feel when standing under a sky full of stars. Small in a way that is grounding, not diminishing.
Itโs humbling. Itโs breathtaking.
And if Iโm being honestโฆ It's slightly addictive.
Because once youโve experienced that kind of mystery not on a screen, not in a documentary, but firsthand, you start craving that feeling of discovery again.
Not to conquer it.
Just to witness it.

For me, thereโs something magical about the Amihan season. The seas turn calm and flat, perfect for someone like me, or for anyone just starting out. Whether Iโm on a Discovery Dive in Anilao or exploring the colorful reefs of Bauan, the ocean seems to call my name. And honestly? Once it grabs you, it never really lets go.
I keep coming back to what Jacques-Yves Cousteau said:
โThe sea, once it casts a spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.โ
Thatโs exactly how I feel every single dive.
So if youโre thinking about itโฆ donโt wait. Grab your gear, find a dive buddy, and get ready to see the world in a way that will completely shift your perspective.
Iโll see you down there.
