There is something almost poetic about the transition from the humid heat of the city to the cool, crystal-clear embrace of the Philippine waters during this time of year. I’ve always felt that Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the legendary oceanographer, said it best:

Before I tried scuba diving, I honestly thought it was just swimming, just with a heavy tank strapped to your back.

But the moment I took my first breath underwater, I realized it was something else entirely.

It felt like liquid space travel.

As I descended, my body slowly adjusted… and then it happened, I became weightless. Not just physically, but mentally. You become weightless. The noise of the world, the traffic, the notifications, the stress, your boss, is replaced by the rhythmic, soothing sound of your own bubbles.

Breathing in.
Breathing out.
That steady exhale rising above you.

Down there, everything slows. The chaos of Manila feels impossibly far away, even though it’s only a few hours’ drive. No deadlines. No expectations. Just the quiet hum of the ocean holding you.

What amazes me is how accessible this world is. You don’t need a rocket ship or a billion-dollar budget to explore the unknown. Just a short trip, a tank, and the courage to descend and suddenly you’ve entered what feels like “outer space.”

In front of me were coral gardens that looked like alien landscapes. Fish moved like they were choreographed. Creatures I had only seen in documentaries glided past me as if I were part of their world.

For those moments underwater, I wasn’t an employee. I wasn’t stressed. I wasn’t rushing toward the next thing.

I was simply there,  floating, breathing, witnessing.

And that’s when I understood: scuba diving isn’t just a swim.

It’s an escape, a reset, and in many ways, a quiet return to yourself.

The best part of diving is undoubtedly the residents. From the tiny nudibranchs that look like neon-colored 𝘗𝘰𝘬é𝘮𝘰𝘯 slugs to the majestic sea turtles gliding past you with the wisdom of centuries in their eyes.

And then, of course, there’s everyone’s favorite: the Clownfish. They might look cute and cuddly (thanks, Disney!), but they have one of the most bizarre social structures in the animal kingdom.

As you hover near an anemone, watching these little guys "pop" at you, you realize that Cousteau was right again:

I used to look up at the night sky and wonder what was out there, galaxies, planets, entire systems we may never reach. But the more I dive, the more I realize that the greatest mystery isn’t above us.

It’s beneath us.

The first time I learned that humans have directly observed only about 0.001% of the deep ocean floor far less than what we’ve mapped in parts of our solar system, I just stared at that number in disbelief. We talk about exploring Mars and distant worlds, yet right here on Earth lies a frontier we barely understand.

And every time I descend, that thought stays with me.

There’s a quiet possibility that the reef in front of me, the curve of a rock formation, or the way light filters through the blue at that exact moment… might be something no other human eye has fully taken in the same way.

That realization does something to me.

It makes me slower. Softer. More attentive.

Underwater, I feel small but not insignificant. Small in the way you feel when standing under a sky full of stars. Small in a way that is grounding, not diminishing.

It’s humbling. It’s breathtaking.

And if I’m being honest… It's slightly addictive.

Because once you’ve experienced that kind of mystery not on a screen, not in a documentary, but firsthand, you start craving that feeling of discovery again.

Not to conquer it.

Just to witness it.
